What a receipt should contain

A number so you can find the receipt again, and the date the payment was received.
Who received the money
Your name or company name and your address.
Who paid
The name of the person or company that paid you.
What it was for
A short description, such as the service, the product or the invoice number the payment settles.
Amount and currency
The amount received in a clearly stated currency. If you're VAT-registered, some countries also expect the tax rate and amount.

Questions and answers

Is the receipt template free?

Yes. Download it without an account and use it for your own business as often as you like.

What's the difference between a receipt and an invoice?

An invoice asks for payment. A receipt confirms that a payment has been made. If a client has paid an invoice by bank transfer, the bank record often serves as proof, and a receipt is mostly used for cash payments.

Does a receipt need a signature?

It isn't required everywhere, but a signature makes the receipt stronger as proof, especially for cash payments.

Can I fill in the receipt by hand?

Yes. Print the PDF, fill it in by hand and make a copy or a photo for your own records before you hand it over.

Does a receipt need to show VAT?

If you're registered for VAT, a receipt can count as an invoice in some countries and then needs the tax rate and amount. If you aren't registered, don't show VAT. Check the rules where you work.
